Character in Action: The United States Coast Guard on Leadership

Best-selling author Donald T. Phillips ("Lincoln on Leadership") demonstrates the highest qualities of leadership, and how to apply them, using the shining example of the United States Coast Guard.

Viewers of this informative and uplifting film will focus on three major strategies for exercising leadership that maximizes the productivity and smooth sailing of any organization.

First, they will learn to create the culture of the organization. This culture of common values, customs, and beliefs determines how people interact with each other to achieve their mission.

Second, viewers will learn to guide their charges to promote team over self. Studies have shown that when an average group works together as a team, they achieve one-third more productivity. Imagine what your above-average group can do!

Third, viewers will learn to instill in their people a bias for action. Great leadership organizations are constantly changing. Through ongoing decisiveness, empowerment, and giving people in the field priority to act on their own initiative, leaders create a “can do” culture of optimism and action.

Along the way, your organization's leaders will:

  • Understand that an organization’s core values can lay the groundwork for an environment that nurtures leadership.
  • Identify qualities to look for when selecting team members.
  • Recognize the key elements of teamwork.
  • Appreciate that organizations can be successful by empowering people to make decisions.

Watch the United States Coast Guard put these leadership qualities into action – and then apply them to your organization to maximize productivity and effectiveness.

Doing Well and Doing Good - A Stanford Executive Briefing Video

Corporate Social Responsibility as a Profit Generator

  • Altruism, and the building of the Timberland brand.
  • A vision that defines work not only as what we do, but also as who we are.
  • The benefits of shared values and a common commitment to mission.

In an age when consumers and investors alike are gravitating toward companies whose brands they can trust, it's no longer enough to be solely focused on the bottom line. Delivering more than $1.3 billion in sales last year, Timberland is proof that profit-minded companies can build on their success while both "doing well" for shareholders and "doing good" for communities.

Jeff Swartz firmly believes in commerce, and that profits for Wall Street are necessary--but not sufficient. He also believes in commitment: to the basic human rights of everyone involved in the Timberland value chain; to minimizing Timberland's impact on the environment; and to the notion of engaged citizenship, that encourages us to take the resources we have and find the will to create sustainable solutions that are good for everybody.

Jeffrey Swartz is the third generation of the Swartz family to lead Timberland. Under his direction, the company that his grandfather founded along with the brand his father built has grown to become an example for socially-responsible corporations around the world.

Jeff received an MBA from Dartmouth and a BA in comparative literature from Brown.

Ethical leadership.jpg

Ethical Leadership for the 21st Century

For all leaders in our 21st century—upper management, middle management, front-line supervisors, and team leaders—ethics is essential to success. This program helps leaders understand the benefits of ethical behavior and to apply ethical principles in their roles as leaders. Using a well-defined system of understanding ethical decisions and choices, the program helps participants know how to choose the most ethical choices.

The program examines the concept of organizational social responsibility, seeing how values-based organizations today let principles and values guide them in day-to-day decisions, as they avoid wrong behaviors and take active steps to do what’s right. When they complete this program, participants will understand how to be ethical in their own actions, and how to lead others in their groups or organizations to be ethical.

The Complete program contains 5-minute Video (DVD or VHS) with Leader's Guide and 5 Participant Booklets $495.00

Additional Participants Booklets are sold in packs of 5 / $49.75

Effective People Skills

Effective People Skills is a suite of eight 1-hour workshops that cover every conceivable type of conflict that occurs in your workplace, as well as related topics. Most important, it teaches your employees essential skills for resolving conflicts, enhancing collaboration and productivity, and infusing a spirit of teamwork and respect at your company.

Each workshop features an information-rich participant's workbook and an engaging video that dramatizes a particular type of conflict and models an ideal response. The eight modules can be used individually or together, enabling you to tailor content to the unique needs of your organization.

The Effective People Skills Suite

Determining the Right Response to Conflict (1-hour workshop with video) Conflict with others is an unavoidable part of the workplace. Knowing that there are four types of conflict (covert/passiveaggressive, covert-passive, overt-aggressive, and overt-assertive) and that there are four powerful strategies individuals can use in each of these situations empowers all of your employees to turn difficult encounters into productive situations.

Handling Overt Conflict (1-hour workshop with video) Dealing with hot-tempered individuals tests the mettle of even your most poised employee. Handling Overt Conflict teaches every member of your team to stay calm and to develop constructive dialogs with individuals at your firm who are notorious for being difficult - a great way to enhance productivity and bring peace to the office!

Handling Covert Conflict (1-hour workshop with video) What's the best way to approach individuals who don't air their grievances in public, but instead, internalize it and undermine the workplace in subtle ways? Handling Covert Conflict teaches your team how to draw out the hidden issues and concerns of disgruntled employees so that everyone can perform at their peak.

The Aikido Approach to Conflict (1-hour workshop with video) The non-violent martial art of aikido has won the accolades of leading thinkers because it enables participants to view conflict from a radically different perspective - one that allows individuals to resolve differences in a harmonious, noncompetitive, and productive manner. Now you can give your workforce these same powerful tools for use in their day-to-day workplace interactions.

Working Collaboratively (1-hour workshop with video) Much has been said about the importance of collaboration in the global economy, yet far too many employees still think of their areas of responsibilities as personal fiefdoms. Working Collaboratively teaches your staff the fundamentals of collaboration - the art of working together artfully, skillfully, and creatively - which is a powerful way to enhance the productivity of your workforce.

Listening (1-hour workshop with video) It's an old adage that listening is one of the most difficult skills to learn. It's a fact that poor listening skills result in lost opportunities, frustrated workers, and unnecessary mistakes. Listening teaches participants the four steps needed to be a good listener (releasing, attending, amplifying, and reflecting) and how everyone benefits by giving their fellow workers their ear.

Asserting (1-hour workshop with video) Employees who lack the confidence to assert themselves in the workplace deprive your company of innovative ideas and valuable feedback, and they eventually end up frustrated and discontented with their jobs. Asserting helps these individuals to develop the skills they need to express ideas and goals that can make a difference at your company and to find greater satisfaction in their careers.

Giving and Receiving Feedback (1-hour workshop with video) For us to grow personally and professionally, we must be able to give and receive feedback, yet few individuals know how to do this in a nonthreatening and productive manner. Giving and Receiving Feedback teaches your team how to use these two critical skills to help themselves and their associates become what they want to be.

Discovering The Future Series: Paradigm Pioneers by Joel Barker

Business used to be like the old west. After the pioneers blazed new trails, settlers behind them would call out: “Is it safe yet?” When the pioneers called back: “Yes, its safe now.”, the settlers would follow, benefiting from the pioneers risk-taking.

In Paradigm Pioneers, futurist Joel Barker shows that in the 21st century, settlers will be at the highest risk. When the followers call out: “Is it safe out there?”, the pioneers will answer: “Sure but there's nothing left for you!”

You don't have to create your industry's next paradigm shift to be a pioneer. But you can succeed if you know how to spot emerging paradigms and have the intuition, courage, and persistence to bring them into practical application.

Paradigm Pioneers identifies the essential traits of these trail blazers and discusses how you can become one.

Key Concepts: Understanding why it is so important to lead Support the pioneers already in your organization Inspire courage to follow new directions Make wise decisions in the midst of change and Chaos

Duration: 32 minutes. Purchase: $495.00 Rental for 5 days: $295.00. DVD comes with Training Manual
